9-11 Memorial Monument

Students of l'Ecole Française du Maine interviewed Douglas Piehl of Freeport Services who designed and crafted Freeport's 9-11 Memorial monument. The replica of the twin towers is made of two 8-foot long steel beams recovered from the elevator shaft of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Senator Susan Collins dedicated the monument on Sept 11, 2011 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The two beams were donated to the Town of Freeport by the Masonic Lodge of Freeport which coordinated with the Deparment of Homeland Security and the National Guard to have the beams delivered from New York City to Maine. All the work and efforts were donated by Freeport Services and others involved.

Doug Piehl explains how the steel beams were cut using an oxygen torch.
